September 2018 – Where do EPL Players Come From?

Executive Summary

This report seeks to discover which league/country/continent each player within the English Premier League was signed from.

1 – Which Leagues are EPL players signed from

Every player in each EPL squad signed on a permanent contract, not a loan signing, (498 total players) was recorded based on which league they were playing in prior to joining their current team.

 Key Observations

-        English clubs take up the largest % of signings

o   1 – EPL – 116 signings (23.29%)

o   2 – EFL Championship – 86 signings (17.27%)

o   3 – Academy Graduates – 47 signings – (9.44%)

o   8 – EFL League One – 22 signings (4.42%)

o   15 – EFL League Two – 5 signings (1%)

o   England – National League – 2 signings (0.4%)

o   TOTAL = 278 (55.82%)

After England, the ‘Big 5’ European Leagues follow

o   4 – La Liga – Spain – 34 (6.83%)

o   5 – Ligue Un – France – 32 (6.43%)

o   6 – Bundesliga – Germany – 29 (5.82%)

o   7 – Serie A – Italy – 26 – (5.22%)

o   TOTAL = 121 (24.7%)

Combining the players signed from within England & the ‘Big 5’ gives you 399 signings = 80%

-        There are more players signed from EFL League One sides (22) than the top flights in Portugal (16), Netherlands (12) & Belgium (10).

-        Only 3 players signed from Brazil’s top flight & 1 from Argentina.
